Digimat predicts the thermo-dependent linear and nonlinear anisotropic mechanical behavior of multi-phase materials such as Polymer Matrix Composites (PMC), Metal Matrix Composites (MMC), Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC), Rubber and Elastomer Composites, etc.

Thermo-Mechanical properties for Material Engineering applications

Material engineering applications involving thermo-mechanical material properties rely on two tools: Digimat-MF and Digimat-FE.

Digimat-MF to simulate thermo-mechanical performances of composite materials

For all types of composite material, thermo-mechanical performance, as thermal expansion and stiffness as function of the temperature, is computed by Digimat-MF by using the Mean-Field homogenization technique. This technology predicts in a very fast way:

  • the evolution of the stiffness matrix of the composite with the temperature
  • the stress-strain curve of the composite for a given thermo-mechanical load
  • the average stress and average strain in every constituent of the composite

Thanks to its ease of use, Digimat-MF constitutes as a virtual laboratory where a large number of materials can be tested in a very short period of time at various temperatures. The design of a composite material can then be optimized to reach specific targets. Viscous effects can also be taken into account.

Digimat-FE to simulate thermo-mechanical performances of composite materials

A more in-depth analysis of the behavior of a composite can be performed in Digimat-FE. In this tool, the complete stress and strain distribution inside a composite material can be investigated. For instance, curing effect of MMC can be investigated. Dedicated statistical tools are available to post-process the FE results to take smart decisions on the improvement of the design of your material.
